Helpful consumer’s review
As far as print quality, both black and colour, you can buy this printer with confidence. Very easy to set up and install, with good interactive guides to confirm clear printed instructions. It’s not too noisy, in fact it’s no noisier than my last mono printer. Text is sharp, colour images surprisingly good, although photographs do tend to be a little dark – easily rectified by HP’s excellent software provided with the printer.
I’m not using this laser to print photographs – I use a dye sub for that. My prime need for this printer is mainly as a mono printer, with the option to use colour if I want to. The biggest issue with this colour laser like any other is the outrageous price of the toner refills. So I’ll keep replacing the black toner when I need to, and when the colour cartridges run out, I’ll just replace the printer! At nearly £70 per colour cartridge, and three colour cartridges as well as the black one, you can see why it’s not cost effective to buy replacement cartridges.
Why buy colour if you’re not going to print loads of colour images? – because the printer is as cheap as a mono printer so why not have the option?
It’s slow – but not that slow for a home user. Black text only has a reasonable output speed. Add colour to your text, and it slows right down. 50 two sided documents (effectively 100 pages) with small colour photo thumbnails on each side took around 15 mins to print. Mainly because after 15 pages or so, the printer stops for breath and then resumes. The number of times I need to print large print jobs such as this is limited, so it’s not going to bother me that much – one two-sided page takes very little time, certainly nothing to worry you about. If however, you are running a business that has a heavy printer output demand, then this machine is not for you.
On the subject of duplex – it’s manual but dead easy, and to date I’ve had no page jams. Just ask the print tool box to enable two sided printing with ‘flip over’ option selected – that way you only have to pick up the pages exactly as they are when churned out of the printer and then reinsert in the paper tray.
Only cons for this printer – slow speed for large print output and poorly designed paper tray which you get used to.
On a slightly different note, I’m disappointed that two of the largest retailers refused point blank to demonstrate any colour printer I was interested in. How we are supposed to make informed choices as a result is beyond me!! The usual excuse was on the lines of “sorry, not installed and no toner”. Rubbish!!!! Can’t be bothered, more like.
