Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera (18-55mm VR Lens Kit) features an innovative Vari-angle monitor for an exciting new take on photography.
Combined with Live View shooting, this monitor gives you the ability to shoot from almost any angle. And your creativity is not limited to still images – Nikon’s D-Movie function lets you record richly detailed HD movie clips too.
There’s also a dazzling array of shooting features to help you get great shots. Add to this a superb 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor working in tandem with Nikon’s EXPEED image processing system and watch your photos and movie clips come alive with all the stunning beauty for which Nikon is famous.
Helpful consumer’s review
As there will be many better qualified reviews on this camera generally available all over the web this is more of a comparison than a full review, as having only recently purchased a Nikon D90 I was curious to find out should I have waited for the launch of the D5000. I returned to the shop and gave the D5000 a test drive to see for myself the differences and hopefully give those contemplating purchasing a D90 or D5000 some food for thought.
Performance wise I would chose a D90, it feels more solid, has face recognition and has slightly faster continuous shoot rate of 4.5 frames per second. The D5000 stands out because of the ability to flip out the lcd monitor which is extremely handy if you’re shooting in video mode and need to raise the camera above your head. Spec wise both cameras use the same sensor and image processing chips so there’s no real difference there.
There’s very little differnce in the makeup of both cameras but if you do a side by side checklist of all the specs on each camera you’ll see the D90 has several features the D5000 hasn’t. I’m sure whichever camera you chose you’ll be amazed at it’s capabilities and overall performance.
If you can, go to a camera shop and handle both cameras – there’s currently very little difference in their prices but even with the new flip out screen I’d have still chosen the D90 above the D5000.
